The Architectural Photography Awards ("the Competition") The Competition is judged by a panel of top Architects, Editors and Critics from around the world and WAF attendees.


Anyone can enter except those directly involved with the Organisers or the Sponsors. Entrants are responsible for ensuring that they have read and abided by the Competition Rules set out in this document. By submitting an entry you agree to the Competition Rules and the Organisers requirements. Entries that do not abide by the Competition Rules and Organisers Requirements will be disqualified. Any entries that are disqualified will not be entitled to a refund and any prizes will be forfeited. The Organisers decisions in relation to the Competition are final and binding, no negotiation will be considered.


The competition is annual. The Awards open on April 1st 2017 and close at midnight on Sunday 2nd July 2017.  

For individual photographers

A one off registration and admin fee of £55 is payable (+ £11 vat is payable if in the UK/EU. EU members should give their vat number if they wish to be exempt from this tax). The fee will allow entrants to submit up to 3 images per category (i.e. up to 12 images in total). Payment by Paypal.


The award categories are:
Exterior Images should be of the exterior of a building communicating the nature of that building.
Interior Images should be of a building interior effectively communicating the space.
Sense of Place Images should show buildings or spaces in their wider context and environment.
Buildings in Use Images should show occupied buildings.
The overall winner as decided by the judges will be designated as the Arcaid Images Architectural Photographer of the Year.


The winners will be announced at the World Architecture Festival, 15 - 17 November, Arena Berlin, Germany, attended by world leading architects. Images will be Shortlisted and Winning Images will be displayed in a dedicated space at the World Architecture Festival in Berlin and in Sto Werkstatt, Clerkenwell, London. Sto and Arcaid Images will promote the winners and their images.


Images shot with any form of photographic equipment are accepted, as long as they meet the image specifications set out in section 9. Images shot on both film and digital cameras are accepted but entry is only possible via digital submission


Images shot from 2nd July 2012 to 2nd July 2017 (inclusive) will be eligible for entry. Please note the increased 5 year limit for award entries.


Digital manipulation may be used to optimise your images; cropping, brightness, contrast, colour balance, dust spot and minor artefact removal and HDR are all permitted.


The Entrant must be the author and own all rights to the images entered, entry of the image must not infringe the rights of any other party. The Entrant holds the legal responsibly for ensuring that the entered images comply with these ownership and copyright requirements. The Organisers do not make any claim on the copyright of the images, the photographer will retain the copyright at all times.

By entering the Competition the Entrant grants the Organisers and Award Partners and Sponsors a non-exclusive irrevocable licence to reproduce, publish and communicate to the public by any means and exhibit their image(s) and copies of their image(s) in all media throughout the world, including social media in relation to the Competition.

This may include, but is not limited to: inclusion in a book, display at exhibitions, publicity materials and display on a web browser; on the competition website and on the websites of sponsors and supporters; on social media used by the competition, its sponsors and supporters; for use in releases to be distributed globally to international, national, regional & specialist press and other media giving information about or promoting the competition.

The Organisers and the Sponsors will always issue the press with credit details/byline for the Photographer – we cannot  offer a guarantee the end user will adhere to the instructions.


Images must meet these technical specifications:

40MB minimum size when uncompressed at 300dpi
High resolution Jpeg format
Adobe RGB (1998) colour space
Filename: photographers name_category_image number_jpg (Eg: JohnSmith_senseofplace_01_jpg)

All images must contain the following information in the metadata;
Photographers name, contact details and PayPal reference (if applicable)
Project name, Building type, Architect, Location, Country
Clients name (If applicable)
and Date Shot (must match camera data)

By We Transfer, Hightail or similar, NOT Dropbox
Submit each category separately

Please note that all submissions must arrive by the deadline of Midnight Sunday 2nd July 2017


You hold all permissions needed for the exploitation of the images by third parties in print, online and for inclusion in an exhibition. Including without limitation, from subjects or owners of products or property depicted. Any exercise of the these rights and permissions shall not violate the rights of any third party including without limitation, the rights of the subject of the images., in particular with regards to laws relating to trade mark, copyright, privacy, publicity and defamation within the UK, USA or elsewhere.

By entering, each entrant confirms and warrants that:
They have received any necessary permissions from the owner(s) of objects including buildings and people included in the images for the usage rights required by the competition and will indemnify the competition against any claims made by any third parties in respect of such infringement.

Proof of online submission cannot be considered proof of receipt by the organisers. The Organisers regret that they cannot accept liability for any loss or damage of any image entered into the Competition however it is caused. The Organisers regret that they cannot accept liability for the misuse of images and/or failure of any third party to comply with the Competition’s credit guideline. No images can be returned after the completion of the Competition.


All prize winners will agree to take part in publicity about the awards after the results are announced.


All rights to Architectural Photography Awards Competition reside with the Organisers partners and sponsors.


The rules of the Competition and the relationship between the Competition and its entrants shall be governed by English law. Any dispute may be decided by the English courts or those of any other part of the United Kingdom.
